Its that time again here on Oahu. Many phone calls we receive in early summer are related to green pools. In order to properly maintain your pool and not have it turn green you need to understand why it turns green. Their are a myriad of factors that turn a pool green, but the 2 biggest are:
1 Lack of Sanitizer 2 Lack of filtration Many pool owners try but fail to keep up with regular pool service. Missing a week of adding sanitizer and balancing your pool water starts you down the slippery slope towards a green pool. EX: you usually clean and balance your pool on Wednesday afternoon. This week life catches up and you are unable to get to it, Sunday comes around and you have a BBQ and pool party, wake up the next day and the pool is cloudy and starting to turn. Once this process of turning has started it is very easy to go completely green or for the home owner to Nuke the pool, and make it un-swimmable for days or even weeks. If you are unable to consistently treat and test your pool, do the right thing and leave it to the pros. Secondly lack of filtration is another major factor. Many home owners go to long between filter cleanings. It is true for sand filters that a little film of dirt is actually better than completely clean filter, because it creates a sticky film which catches more dirt. However going more than 5-6 weeks on filter cleanings will result in algae growth in your filter media. which means that every day you are filtering your pool water through pond scum, hmmmm no wonder it never gets clear. Here in Hawaii we also deal with 365 days of sun and over spray from fertilizer, both of which will aid in turning that pool to green. So if your pool is not looking nice and clean or is completely green. give Kai Lani Pools a call and we will be happy to service your swimming pool or spa. Aloha, Nick Youngleson

As we move into summer here on Oahu, your pool or spa's chemical balance will change as more people swim and the water temperature increases. Many home owners will try their best to maintain their own pools, however if you do not test and balance every week, the pool will turn. As the green or yellow algae appears many people will purchase algaecide. Most of these treatments use either copper or sodium bromide, if used correctly they will destroy the algae pretty quickly. However some times the customer will use three or four times the amount recommended, the problem with that is that these algaecides affect chlorine levels in your pool. To much Sodium bromide will cause the Chlorine levels to fall and will require large amounts of shock to return it to normal. To much copper will stain a plaster pool and may cause the pool to turn neon green whenever chlorine shock is added.
So next time your Oahu pool gets some algae, please follow instructions, Or call the Pool Pros. Aloha, Nick Youngleson Aloha Readers
On Oahu we have a large number of Condos and Apartment complexes. Because Hawaii has swim friendly climate year round, most of facilities have a pool or spa. These can be great amenities that add value and tenant/owner appeal if maintained properly. If not they can become an eye sore or even worse a liability. Hiring a 3rd party servicing or repair company which is familiar with large pool/spa maintenance is key. This pool service company will primarily do two things; firstly they take pressure of the building maintenance crew which may not have the time or expertise to run the pool area properly. Secondly they act as a buffer against legal matters. So rather than burden your maintenance crew and create a legal liability, do the sensible thing and higher a pool service and repair company.
