As we move into summer here on Oahu, your pool or spa's chemical balance will change as more people swim and the water temperature increases. Many home owners will try their best to maintain their own pools, however if you do not test and balance every week, the pool will turn. As the green or yellow algae appears many people will purchase algaecide. Most of these treatments use either copper or sodium bromide, if used correctly they will destroy the algae pretty quickly. However some times the customer will use three or four times the amount recommended, the problem with that is that these algaecides affect chlorine levels in your pool. To much Sodium bromide will cause the Chlorine levels to fall and will require large amounts of shock to return it to normal. To much copper will stain a plaster pool and may cause the pool to turn neon green whenever chlorine shock is added.
So next time your Oahu pool gets some algae, please follow instructions, Or call the Pool Pros. Aloha, Nick Youngleson
